My Intentions

What are my intentions for Catfishing Strangers to Find Myself?

I have discovered, whilst researching the topic of Catfishing, that the perpetrator is rarely given a voice. It is rarely brought to light the reasons why someone might Catfish another person. Whilst some may think that it is unnecessary and undeserving to give the Catfish a chance to speak, I believe that it is an interesting topic to explore. This has no reflection on my personal opinion towards the Catfish, and I do not necessarily want the audience to like or empathise with my character; I simply want the audience to find themselves considering whether my character’s actions are justified or not. It is simply food for thought, and something that the audience may not have considered before.

UPDATE:

After my performance, a member of the audience spoke to me and said that they had found themselves with conflicting emotions, as they too had been a victim of Catfishing. The said that although they had been on the receiving end of it and thought that they could never sympathise with a Catfish, I had opened their eyes about the idea of self-love, or in this case no self-love, and the extreme measures that someone will go to to find self-love. I feel as though I have achieved my intentions!

Technical Decisions:

There is little lighting and sound in my performance. This is because I would like the focus to be on the words being spoken, and I feel as though sound may take away from that.

Section One:

Lighting –

Pink wash as audience enter. On clearance the lights dim slightly over audience. (I have chosen pink because section one focuses on dressing a naked female body).

Sound –

UGH! The 1975

Section Two:

Lighting –

Pink spotlight on mannequin whilst live feed plays on television.

Sound –

No sound.

Section Three:

Lighting –

No lights except for projection – this helps with the clarity of the images being projected.

Sound –

Projection plays in silence. My intention is to create a sense of ‘calm before the storm’.
