A Reflection

'Flowers Bloom' - National Geographic

‘Flowers Bloom’ – National Geographic

While most of my posts have been sitting in the ‘Drafts’ section of my blog while I completed my process, this post I am actually writing after my performance of Catfishing Strangers to Find Myself (24/05/17). I have given myself some questions to consider and that enable me to reflect on the module.

How was your performance received by your audience?

The impact on my audience was as intended. Whilst some felt that it was intense and raw, particularly Section Two, others felt as though it was peaceful and calm. I am pleased with this, as I did not want to attempt to get my point across with aggression. My performance was more ‘food for thought’ rather than making a blazing statement.

How do you think it went?

I feel as though my performance was a success. I had my concerns about dressing the mannequin on my own as it was heavy and awkward to manoeuvre whilst trying to accommodate for an audience, and because I had borrowed it from a retail shop, I had been unable to practise much with it. Despite this, I believe that it worked seamlessly in my piece. I am pleased that I finally got to work with projection in my final performance at University, and I feel like it was extremely effective in the show. The projection hit the mannequin as well as the back curtain, and the blooming flowers on the mannequin spoke volumes about the growing body, self-love and ‘finding yourself’, all whilst being projected in silence.

How would you improve your performance?

I would liked to have been able to have a live-stream of my performance (accessible online), although I feel like the live-feed of my confessional tape still portrayed my ‘online self’ and the effect that the internet and social media has on others. My performance was in the shorter time bracket (8 mins 4 secs), so I feel as though I would have had room to add another section to my piece, using more multimedia and making it more interesting.
